Human dignity must be upheld at all times – Social Welfare

The Ghana Association of Social Workers (GASOW) on Tuesday said, human dignity must be upheld in all matters of socio-cultural, economic, educational and political dispensation of the nation.

This was contained in a statement to mark this year’s World Social Work Day and the United Nations (UN) Social Work Day, signed by Mr. Peter Amos Tweneboa-Kodua, the President of the Association.

The statement said the dignity of the human person must be the foundation of any moral and ethical vision.

It said this includes human rights issues in relation to social, economic, cultural and political situations and respect for diversity and different belief systems, especially indigenous religions.

The statement said human life is under direct attack from domestic violence, child abuse, chieftaincy disputes, cheating of the poor, unfairness and injustice against the poor and the needy and inequality.

It called for the protection of the right to life by addressing and seeking effective ways to prevent poverty, starvation, and marginalization in order to improve the lives of the vulnerable in the society.

The statement said: “To address the new global challenges and to achieve the Global Agenda, social workers believe that new strategies have to be employed.”

It said the association is committed to employing strategies, including extending partnerships, building capacity and assets, developing a unified professional voice and engaging with local, national, regional and global bodies.**
