Three supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) at Akyem Asuboa in the Birim Central Municipality were killed on the spot and many others sustained various degrees of injuries when a mini bus run into them.
Yaa Kwakyewa 33, a mother of six children, Maa Attah, an 18-year old girl and another male adult yet to be identified, were among a group of supporters jogging on the main Akyem-Oda -Agona-Sweduro road on Sunday morning.
The injured are on admission at Akim-Oda Government Hospital.
They included: Prince Osei Tuffour 24, Joseph Sarfo 32 and Kwame Owusu, who has fallen into coma, Kwaku Addo, 32, Fimpong Odei, 17, Isaac Mensah, 20, Prince Ofosu Manu Peprah, 28, Janet Asamoah, 21 and Alberta Dankwa.
Mr Enoch Maafo, an eye witness and one of the joggers, disclosed this when Ms Ophelia Koomson, the Birim Central Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), in the company of Alhaji Mohammed Azonko, the Municipal Coordinating Director, visited the injured at the hospital to wish them a speedy recovery.
He said the accident happened at a spot between Akyem-Asuboa and Akyem Manso when a driver of an urvan bus with registration number GP450Z ignored warning signs to slow down and ran into the group.
According to Mr Maafo, the driver was trying to overtake a vehicle ahead of him only to see a saloon car coming from Akyem-Oda in the opposite direction.
He said to avoid a head-on collision with the saloon car, the urvan bus driver veered off and ran into the group jogging and killed the three on the spot.
Meanwhile, the vehicle involved in the accident has been parked at the Akyem-Oda Divisional Police Headquarters but the driver is believed to have bolted.**
