Shama District marks independence with role play/parade

Children of the Saint Mary’s Kindergarten in Shama in the Western Region on Tuesday put up a splendid re enactment of Ghana’s independence declaration to the admiration of town folks at a parade held to mark the day.

The children, aged between six and eight, wore white smocks over a cap to match to imitate the six people who mounted the stage at the Accra Polo grounds some 55 years ago as one of them played the role of Dr Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana’s First President, shedding tears of joy after declaring the independence before an excited crowd.

The spectators including the MP for Shama, Mr Gabriel Essielfie, traditional elders, assembly members, security personnel, heads of departments and teachers rendered a loud applause.

Mr Enoch Appiah, District Chief Executive (DCE) for Shama, joined by the MP, the district Director of Education, Madam Florence Inkoom and a Police Officer took the salute during the march past.

In an address, the DCE impressed on local traditional and opinion leaders in communities to restrict children from attending funerals.

They must also invest in their wards’ education and ensure that they spend their leisure periods profitably to improve their lot to enable them become assets rather than liabilities on families and the society.

Mr Appiah said parents must complement the efforts of teachers and the assembly to bring up their wards to become responsible adults.

The MP for Shama, Mr Essielfie, appealed to the electorate to respect the district’s bye-laws and go by their duties accordingly to ensure progress.

In a welcoming address, Madam Florence Inkoom, District Director of Education, advised school children not to become tools and pawns for electoral malpractice.

They should rather prepare themselves morally and academically and aim at seeking challenging national assignments in future.

The district education directorate awarded institutions, individuals, students, and teachers whose contributions both in kind and cash have enhanced progress of education in the district.
