Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Freeman Tetteh, Public Affairs Officer at the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Ghana Police Service on Friday reminded policemen that those who shirked their fatherly responsibilities would be put before the Family Tribunal.
DSP Tetteh, who gave the reminder at a day’s sensitisation programme for personnel of the Ashaiman Divisional Command of the Service, regretted that policemen were the major perpetrators in non-maintenance cases.
The personnel drawn from Dodowa, Ada and Ashaiman were educated on the activities of DOVVSU and the importance of implementing the Community Policing Concept.
DSP Tetteh advised young personnel to desist from shirking their fatherly responsibilities, the act, which he said, was shameful to the Police Service.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP), Mina Ayim, Commander of the Community Police Unit (CPU), said even though the police-public ratio should be at least one officer to 500 people, unfortunately the ratio was one officer to over 1000 people in the country.
DCOP Ayim added that due to logistical constraint more personnel could not be engaged to bridge the gap thus leading to the adoption of Community Policing Concept.
She stated that the concept enabled the community to participate in curbing and controlling crime in their societies.
Chief Superintendent Mohammed Suraji, Deputy Commander of the CPU in a presentation, encouraged personnel to establish closer and cordial relationship with stakeholders to enable them tap into their resources and expertise.
Chief Supt. David Eklu, Ashaiman Divisional Commander in a welcome address, said his outfit lacked logistics, especially vehicles, adding that the Division could boast of only one rickety car.
He, therefore, appealed to public-spirited individuals and organisations to come over to help the Division.
