Collapsed bridge renders residents of Wassa Atobiase, Sekyere-Boase stranded

Residents of Wassa Atobiase and Sekyere-Boase in the Mpohor Wassa East have been cut-off from the rest of the District because the only bridge that connects the two communities has collapsed.

According to the residents, the wooden bridge, constructed through the contributions of the two communities, was weakened by the activities of small- scale miners who use heavy machinery and materials over it resulting in its collapse last Wednesday.

A resident of Wassa Atobiase, Opanyin Francis Egyan, told journalists that the situation had stranded traders who wanted to send their foodstuffs to market centres while farm produce was getting rotten in the bush.

He said schoolchildren could not go to school and this could affect their performance at the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) in April.

When the District Chief Executive for the area, Mr. Anthony Bassaw, was contacted, he said he would discuss the issue with the District Feeder-Road Engineer towards taking steps to rectify the situation.
