Greater Accra Heath Service Directorate, and stakeholders in the Greater Accra Region, have held an annual Health Performance Review at the weekend in Accra.
The review was to report on the progress and challenges the Directorate faced in health delivery last year.
It also served as platform for resource mobilization, strategic planning, research agenda setting, policy consideration and general information on the health status of people living in the region.
Speaking at the event, Professor Irene Agyepong, Regional Director of Health Services outlined achievements as: declining of under five mortality, increase in childhood immunization coverage, improvement in prevention of mother to child transmission of HIV and AIDS.
Others include the declining rate of institutional maternal mortality, increased patronage of National Health Service Scheme.
She mentioned hypertension and diabetes as the two main diseases affecting the people in the region.
Prof. Agyepong said the major challenge facing the region was inadequate human resource, infrastructure, equipments, tools and supplies.
“An increase in staffing must closely link numbers and skills as well as pay attention to issues of retention”, she added.
Prof. Agyepong called on Government to support the Directorate for better health delivery in the region.
She suggested that health workers, especially doctors should be accommodated at places where they work to enhance efficiency.
Prof. Agyepong urged health workers to be disciplined and tolerate patients.
