Herbalist charged for alleged defilement

Abediako Martin, a 30-year-old trainee herbalist at Kasoa, who allegedly defiled and impregnated a 15-year-old patient on treatment, on Friday appeared before an Accra Circuit Court.

Martin pleaded not guilty to defilement and was remanded into lawful custody to re-appear on March 13.

The prosecutor, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Sarah Acquah said the victim lived with her sister at Tsokome, Kasoa while the accused lived in the same house with her.

She said the victim was living with her mother at Asamankese and sometime in December 2011 fell sick and was brought to the herbalist who lived in the same house with the victim’s sister for treatment.

ASP Acquah said the accused being trained as a herbalist proposed to marry the victim, but defiled and impregnated her.

She said a concerned citizen reported the case to Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Ghana Police and the accused was arrested, he confessed defiling the victim who was his girl friend.
