Kwahu Citizens Give Old Road Facelift

A large number Kwahu citizens from Nkawkaw, Obomeng, Obo and Mpraeso have undertaken a six-hour communal labour on the abandoned five-kilometre Nkawkaw-Obomeng road to make it motorable as an alternative road to the Kwahu Ridge.

The cleared the bush and felled trees blocking the road, filled pot holes and disilted drains along the road.

According to the chairman of the Kwahuman Road Rehabilitation Committee, Dr. Kwasi Adjepong, the road was constructed through communal labour by the colonial masters over 75 years ago as the first road to the Kwahu Ridge before the construction of the Nkawkaw-Atibie road after independence by some foreigners to mine bauxite on the Ridge.

He said the road was abandoned by the Ghana Highways Authority (GHA), when it was blocked by a landslide in 1984, while a contractor, who won a contract to reconstruct it failed to work on it due to lack of efficient equipment.

Dr. Adjepong said members of the committee decided to mobilise the people to rehabilitate the road to serve as an alternative to the Kwahu Ridge to enable the contractors working on the Nkawkaw-Atibie road to get adequate time for efficient work..

The Vice-Chairman of the Committee, Mr. Ofosu Dankyi said though the GHA said it will be capital intensive to maintain the road, they will use communal labour to rehabilitate it for motorists.

He appealed to the government, GHA, the District Assembly and the three MPs from the area for assistance to ensure early rehabilitation of the road to serve a worthy course.

The DCE, Mr. Raymond Osafo Djan, said the road had not been abandoned but said it would be capital intensive to maintain it and assured the people of the assembly’s assistance, in the form of a truck and labour.
