‘Significant’ amount of oil found in Ghana

DALLAS, Jan. 19 (UPI) — There were “significant” quantities of oil encountered at a deep-water well off the coast of Ghana, an energy company in Texas announced.

Kosmos Energy, which has headquarters in Dallas, announced it encountered “significant quantities” of light crude oil in about 5,600 feet of water.

The company said there is the potential at its Ntomme-2A appraisal well for an oil column measuring roughly 410 feet.

“The presence of a significant oil leg at Ntomme is a great result for Kosmos Energy,” Paul Dailly, a senior vice president of exploration, said in a statement.

“Ntomme was originally identified as a gas-condensate discovery; however, this well confirms the majority of resources to be oil.”

Ghana is looking for experts to develop its offshore potential, as the newly elected government has little experience in managing oil reserves. Its offshore Jubilee field is one of the richest oil fields in Africa with potential reserves eclipsing 1.8 billion barrels.

Jubilee partners include Tullow, Anadarko Petroleum, Kosmos Energy, Ghana National Petroleum Corp., Sabre Oil and Gas and E.O. Group.
