The clergy ask government to do more to fight poverty

Kumasi, Jan. 5, GNA – The National Ministers’ Conference of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana has urged the government to step up its effort at fighting poverty.

The Reverend Dr Joseph Obiri Yeboah Mante, President of the Conference, expressed concern that only a few Ghanaians are doing well financially with the majority remaining poor.

“We plead with the government to make what they have written on paper become existential in the lives of ordinary Ghanaians,” he said.

Rev Mante was addressing the annual meeting of the Clergy in Kumasi on the theme: “Fulfil your Ministry.”

The Ministers among other things are taking stock of their activities and plan the way forward.

Rev Mante said given the prevailing socio-economic trend “it will take a strong commitment to sacrificial governance to turn the economic situation for the better”.

He called on the government to put in place the necessary measures to make sure that this year’s elections are free, fair and credible, whilst the political parties should conduct clean and decent campaign free from acrimony, rumours and insults.

Rev Mante asked the Mills Administration to rethink the decision to revert the Senior High School system from four years to three years.

He said there was clear evidence that the four-year duration was more beneficial to students.
