Court jails mason 12 years for defilement

Nsuta (Ash), Dec. 19, GNA – An Nsuta Circuit Court, presided over by Justice Nyanteh Akuffo, has sentenced a 48-year old mason to 12 years imprisonment in hard labour for defiling a seven-year old girl.

Kofi Oteng initially pleaded not guilty explaining that he is impotent, but later shifted from his line of defence to plead for leniency.

“I promised never to repeat the crime,” he told the court.

Prosecuting Police Inspector Nana Owusu Boamah said that the convict and the victim live in the same house at Nsuta in the Sekyere Central District.

At about 1530 hours on March 14, Oteng baited the little girl with an invitation to watch television in his room and sexually abused her.

The prosecution said the victim told the mother about her bitter experience.

A formal report was made to the police and a medical report signed by doctors who attended to the girl confirmed she has been defiled.

Passing the sentence, Justice Akuffo said the growing incidence of sexual assault on children is a blot on the collective conscience of the nation.
