Ghana’s Stand On Sierra Leone Crisis Commended

Accra (GAR), June 25, – The Sierra Leone People’s Democratic League (PDL) today commended the government of Ghana for its stand on the situation in Freetown after the May 25 coup. A letter addressed to Mr Victor Gbeho, deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, signed by Mr Alimamy Bakarr Sankoh, Chairman and Leader of PDL, said much as they oppose military coups, they appreciate Ghana’s efforts to exploit all diplomatic avenues to restore peace in Sierra Leone. “By opting for this, we know you clearly want to avoid a photostat copy of the Liberian situation in Sierra Leone, which has become more complicated by the presence of foreign troops and mercenaries.” The PDL called for the immediate return of the leader of the rebel Revolutionary United Front Corporal Foday Saybanah Sankoh to Sierra Leone for an early resolution of the problems. They appealed to the government of Ghana to persuade the Nigerian government to allow Corporal Sankoh, who has been appointed Deputy Chairman of the Sierra Leone Armed Forces Revolutionary Council, to return to home.
