NYEP introduces motorised tricycles to improve rural transportation

Dzodze (V/R), Sept. 28, GNA – A total of 1,000 youth from the Volta Region are to acquire tricycle riding skills, under the Rural Transportation Module under the National Youth Employment Programme (NYEP).

After the training, each beneficiary would be supplied with an engine powered tricycle to operate commercially and pay off the cost.

Mr Harrison Zinanu, Regional Co-ordinator of the of the Asongtaba Cottage Industries, an agency working for the technical empowerment of the youth and in partnership with the NYEP said the scheme would provide jobs to the youth and enhance rural transportation across the country.

He was speaking during the presentation of sewing machines and accessories to 39 youth who graduated in dressmaking under the NYEP in the Ketu-North District at Dzodze.

Mr Zinanu said the first batch of 696 dressmaking trainees have been presented with sewing machines in the Region, another 2,439 are being trained in dressmaking while another 1,039 are receiving skilled training hairdressing.

Mr Lawson Kofi, District Chief Executive said government is on course in providing for the people, adding that 78 projects including 35 school infrastructure jobs are being executed in the District while 130 communities have been hooked to the National Electricity Grid.

He advised the recipients to use their skills to train others in their communities.

Mr Jacob Agbenuzah, District NYEP Co-ordinator said 713 youth have so far benefited under the scheme.

He however bemoaned the lack of interest among young men to avail themselves of the training schemes.

Mr Agbenuzah said out of the 240 youth receiving training in the second batch dressmaking model, only 30 are boys and reminded them that acquiring life-long skills is better that chasing “quick money”.
