Parents withdraw wards from school over highway

Tadzewu, Sept 14, GNA – Parents of pupils of the Roman Catholic Basic School at Tadzewu are said to be withdrawing their children from school because of the risk of crossing the new Akatsi/Dzodze highway to school.

Miss Veronica Gbafa, the Headmistress, said this when a team led by Mr Joseph Amenowode, the Volta Regional Minister, visited the school on Tuesday as part of “My First Day in School” activities.

He said about 100 pupils had so far been withdrawn since last term and expressed worry that some of those children might end up not going to school at all.

Miss Gbafa appealed to the authorities to consider building speed ramps to check speeding by drivers because the enrolment in kindergarten had reduced from 70 to 40.

Mr Amenowode presented 15 laptops to the school, selected under the “One Computer One Student Project Pilot Scheme’ in the Volta Region, while the 25 new kids received souvenirs, candies and biscuits to motivate them to remain in school.

He appealed to teachers, parents and communities to complement the efforts of the government to create the right educational environment.

Mr Lawson Kofi, the Ketu North District Chief Executive, said 35 projects in the education sector were going on in the district.

He said vehicular movement on the Akatsi/Dzodze highway, preventing some parents from sending their children to the Tadzewu RC Primary, would be discussed with the contractor on the job for a remedy.
