Damweo elders appeal to youth to be calm

Bolgatanga, Aug. 17, GNA – The youth of two families of Damweo, a suburb of Bolgatanga in the Upper East Region, have been asked to desist from violent acts. The call was made by elders of the two families following a clash by the people over the erection of a container shop at Damweo recently.

It would be recalled that on August 14th this year, the two families disagreed over the erection of the container on plot of land, resulting in violence and destruction of property.

A spokesperson of the elders, Mr Bawa Agana, at a press conference in Bolgatanga on Tuesday, advised the youth to be calm whilst the issue was being resolved.

He read a statement signed by Mr John A Ayeremoah and Mr Louse B Asekeya on behalf of the elders of Damweo, and Alhaji Yusif Adams, the Regional Chief Imam, calling for peace and order in the area. Mr Bawa said the elders cautioned the youth on the devastating effects of conflict on progress and that the Upper East, Upper West and Northern Regions, which lagged behind in development, needed peace for accelerated development.

He said the incident was not fuelled by ethnicity or politics as being purported by a section of the society.

Mr Bawa said: 93We want to state categorically that what happened was a misunderstanding between some few people in Damweo and it had nothing to do with Dagombas and Frafras or the National Democratic Congress or New Patriotic Party NPP. We, therefore, want to clear the erroneous impression created by some people that Dagombas and Frafras are fighting in Bolgatanga.

“We the elders of both sides together with the 91Tindana’, who is the custodian of the land, met yesterday with the Regional Police Command, and it was agreed that we should go back to the Tidana’s house to resolve the issue and report back to the police in four days. We, therefore, want to call on our brothers and sisters in Dagbon, Bolgatanga and elsewhere in the country to relax and stay calm as there is no cause for alarm”.
