Dormaa Libyan returnees appeal for assistance

Dormaa-Ahenkro (B/A), Aug. 10, GNA – About 570 returnees from Libya in the Dormaa Municipality have decided to form cooperative societies to go into large scale farming.
The unemployed returnees have therefore appealed, through the Dormaa Municipal Assembly, to the government, to non- governmental organizations and other stakeholders to assist them with modern agricultural technology and equipment to help them to build their capacities to become self sufficient.
A spokesperson for the returnees Mr Yaw Kyeremeh, made the appeal when executive members of the Association of Liby Returnees held a meeting with the Dormaa Municipal Coordinator, Mr. Philip Baazeng, at Dormaa Ahenkro.
Mr Kyeremeh said since their repatriation from Libya early this year most of the returnees, who were compelled to flee the Libyan crisis empty handed, had been living in poverty.
He said zonal Libya returnees’ cooperative societies being formed in the Dormaa traditional Area had decided to go into large scale cultivation of maize, tomatoes, pepper, as well as poultry farming, teak, palm and cocoa cultivation.
The spokesperson said their choice of maize cultivation for instance was informed on the large concentration of poultry farms in Dormaa Municipality so that the annual scarcity of maize to feed poultry would be eliminated.
Mr. Baazeng lauded the decision of the returnees and assured them of the Assembly’s readiness to contact relevant authorities and agencies that had the potential to address their needs.
He stressed the need for the cooperative society to remain viable and honest so as to win confidence and attract assistance.
