Political activists must show maturity

Obuasi, Aug. 2, GNA – The 2004 Obuasi Parliamentary Candidate for the People’s National Convention, (PNC) Mr. Michael Carr, has advised political activists to demonstrate maturity towards improving Ghana’s democratic governance.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency at Obuasi, Mr. Carr said the character of insults, condemnation and negative criticisms, especially between the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) would not help our democratic dispensation and national development.

It was the responsibility of all the parties, he said, and their members to contribute towards the building of a democracy that would become the envy in the African continent.

“It is not only when your party is in power that you can contribute to the development of the nation and the betterment of its people,” he stressed.

Mr. Carr, therefore, condemned the practice where those in opposition criticized government policies and programmes without offering alternatives.

He urged the parties and their supporters to work towards a violence-free parliamentary and presidential election in 2012.

Mr. Carr also commended the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, for his initiative to honour hardworking teachers and educational workers in rural and deprived areas.

“The recent launch at which 200 teachers and educational workers were given a number of items and cash will go a long way to motivate teachers to accept postings to our rural schools,” he said.

Mr. Carr, however, appealed to the Asantehene to help address all chieftaincy disputes in the Adansi area since the disputes were crippling development in the affected communities.

On the development of the Obuasi Municipality, he commended the assembly but called for the construction of toilets and urinals at the markets to improve sanitation.
