Ho Aug. 2, GNA – Government will fulfil promises it made to the Volta Region, Mr Joseph Amenowode Volta Regional Minister has assured.
He gave the assurance on Monday at a press conference in Ho after Ministers of State, National Democratic Congress (NDC) party executives, Members of Parliament and Municipal and District Chief Executives from the Volta region, had met over concerns by the Asogli Traditional Council and Togbega Gabusu, Paramount Chief of Gbi Traditional about the government’s ability to fulfil its promises to the region.
The major issues raised by the two traditional authorities bordered on the Eastern Corridor road and the University of Health and Allied Sciences.
Mr Amenowode said the government appreciated the anxiety of the chiefs and people of the region and assured them that their fears would soon be laid to rest.
He said the bill establishing the University of Health and Allied Sciences, had been gazetted and sent to Parliament awaiting the 21 days gestation period to be passed when Parliament resumes sitting after the break.
Mr Amenowode assured that the University would open for the 2011/2012 academic year at the Volta Regional Hospital.
He said work would also begin on the 800 acre land acquired for the University.
On the Eastern Corridor road, Mr Amenowode said the government had approved GH¢100 million for the start of the Asikuma to Hohoe stretch of that road.
He said drawings of the Eastern corridor road were commissioned in 2010.
Mr Amenowode said bids for the Dodi-Pepsu section of the road to be funded by the European Union would be opened this week while ECOWAS is funding drawings for the Northern section.
On educational projects, Mr Amenowode said 200 school infrastructure projects has been completed at the basic school level and 100 of such projects at the Senior High School level.
“Never in the history of the Volta Region has such massive development been undertaken in two-and-half years”, Mr Amenowode asserted.
He said government would fulfil its promises to the region before the end of its first four years in office.
