Kumasi, July 24, GNA – The 57th Connexional Biennial Delegates’ Conference of the Lay Movement Council of the Methodist Church Ghana has opened in Kumasi with a call on members to actively respond to the ideals and principles of Methodism.
Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, in a speech read on his behalf, credited the church for over the years playing instrumental role in the provision of quality education and basic social amenities as well as leadership training.
He also lauded its promotion of good moral standards. The Asantehene, therefore, encouraged the Lay Movement, as an integral part of the Church, to mobilize resources and also liaise effectively with stakeholders to advance the cause of the Church for the mutual benefit of members and the society in general.
The three-day Conference is under the theme: 93Connexionalism, Working= as a Team – the Role of the Lay Movement.” It aims at creating a platform for the Council to take stock of its pas= t activities for effective planning of its agenda for the future. The event is also being used to commemorate 50 years of autonomy from the British Methodist Conference. Otumfuo Osei Tutu cited how the Church had been close collaborators of traditional rulers and other development partners in helping mankind in all fields of endeavour. This, he said, had helped to address the needs of the poor, fight injustice in the society and also bring hope to the hopeless through the unadulterated word of God.
The Most Reverend Professor Emmanuel Asante, Presiding Bishop of the Church, urged the Council to use the Conference to critically assess its achievements and challenges within the context of its Mission Statement. He tasked them to remain focused in their activities and forge good relationships with other interest groups to foster unity of purpose and discipline in the Church.
The Presiding Bishop enumerated various development projects initiated by the Church to enhance its revenue generation to meet its obligations and stressed the need for the Council to contribute in cash and kind to realize on-going projects.
Dr Ato Essuman, a Member of the Council of State, recounted the instrumental role played by the laity in promoting Methodism and called on the leadership to work harder to sustain the gains made over the years. Ms Araba Sam is the president of the Lay Movement.
