Nurses should be compassionate-Madam Ibrahim

Nkoranza (B/A), July 20, GNA – Madam Salamatu Ibrahim, Nkoranza South District Director of Health Services, has urged nurses to be compassionate and encourage patients through their illnesses.

She asked nurses to emulate Florence Nightingale, affectionately called The Lady with the Lamp”, recognized the world over as the most famous nurse.

Madam Ibrahim was addressing nurses in charge of 15 health facilities in the district at a mid-year review meeting at Nkoranza.

She deplored negative practices and attitudes of some nurses who frown when attending to patients, saying some even shout at patients.

“Nurses are employed to save lives, handle clients in ways that will encourage them in life, but not to deepen their woes”, the district director stressed.

Madam Ibrahim commended the traditional birth attendants in the area for offering the necessary support to the Ghana Health Services (GHS) by supervising deliveries in the communities without health facilities.

She however advised them to encourage their clients to report to the facilities during the labour period for 93supervised delivery”.

Mr. Charles Kwasi Gyamfi, Nkoranza South District Disease Control Officer, announced that 118 children had been identified as malnourished within the period under review.

He called for the rehabilitation of the malnutrition centre at Nkoranza so that such patients could be referred there for treatment.

The Catholic Relief Services (CRS) used to support the centres with food items and nutrition for malnourished children but such support has been withdrawn, leading to the collapse of the centres.
