Accra, July 13, GNA – Rita Opoku Adjei, a housewife, who managed to escape from Police custody whilst being detained for assault, on Wednesday appeared before an Accra Circuit Court.

Charged with escaping from lawful custody, the trial judge, Mrs Georgina Mensah-Datsa, refused plea of defence counsel for bail and remanded accused into Police custody to re-appear on July 18. Police Inspector A. Ahor, prosecuting told the court that the complainant was Sergeant Georgina Ganyo, a Policewoman stationed at Tesano Police station while the accused was a housewife staying at Mile 7, Achimota.

He said on July 7, this year, the complainant was on duty at the Tesano Police charge office when accused was brought to be detained in connection with an assault case, and when Sergeant Ganyo opened the women’s cell to detain her, the accused took to her heels. The prosecutor said when Sergeant Ganyo chased the accused and in an attempt to apprehend her, she struggled with the policewoman. Inspector Ahor said Sergeant Ganyo was later assisted by other Police personnel to overpower the accused and sent her to the cells.
