Seven Timber Companies Lose Leases

Techiman (B/A), June 20, – The leases of seven timber contractors operating in the Techiman district have been terminated following their alleged infringement on forestry laws. Three others whose licences expired in 1990 have been banned from operating in the district until they renew their licences, Mr Walter E.K. Nyanubah, district forestry officer disclosed this at the second ordinary meeting of the Assembly yesterday. The contractors whose licences have been terminated include Ayaasu timber works, Cant timbers, Kwaku Bronya Timbers, Nana Gyan Ababio and Nana Domo Timbers. Those banned from operating in the district are Nana Fori Memorial Saw Mills and Timbers, Nana Kwaku Buakari Timbers and Kwabena Tih Timbers. Mr Nyanuba said it is an offence for these contractors to exploit timber in their concessions and appealed to assembly members to assist the forestry department to enforce the laws banning their operations. The district co-ordinating director, Mr Samuel Nlary, announced that the district forestry task-force has been reconstituted to enhance its operation in the district.
