Police urged to step up educate on crime prevention

Kumasi, June 28, GNA – The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Kwaku Agyemang-Mensah, has urged the police to step up its public education on crime prevention and assist the people to become more security alert.

He said the people would have to be aided to effectively play their expected part in the crime fight.

Dr Agyemantg-Mensah said this in an address read for him at the regional launch of the 93Crime Fighters confidential hotline,” at the Prempeh Assembly Hall in Kumasi, on Tuesday.

Two telecommunication giants, Vodafone and MTN, and the British High Commission in Ghana, are supporting the police administration with this facility.

It would serve as a reliable information channel between the police and the public in the battle to bring down crime in the society.

People could call the hotline, 9318555″, from all corners of the country for emergency police response.

The Regional Minister underlined the need for the police to protect the identity of people who called to give information.

At the same time, the public should desist from phoney calls and make sure that they provide useful leads that would help track down criminals.

Deputy Commission of Police (DCOP), Patrick Timbilah, the Regional Police Commander, reiterated their resolve to carry the fight to the miscreants to enable the law-abiding to have their peace.

He encouraged the people to be bold to report suspected characters and all criminal cases to the police.

He said under no circumstance should security be taken for granted, adding that, all should join in the fight to reduce crime. Mr Samuel Addo, General Manager of MTN, in charge of Northern Sector, and Mr Delali Agbo-Klu, Field Telecom Manager of Vodafone, said they would use their network to support the efficient operation of the facility.

Nana Ampofo Kyei Baffour, the Asemhene, advised the people to support and give the needed co-operation to the security agencies to protect life and property.
