Public advised to ensure maximum protection during rainy season

Sunyani, June 25, GNA – Mr Ampabeng Kyeremeh, Brong Ahafo Regional Head of the Metrological Department, has advised the general public to as much as possible stay indoors during rainfall due to the stormy rainy season.

He told the Ghana News Agency in an interview that the season, which started in March this year, would come to an end possibly in July and would be full of heavy rains often with thunder and lightening and accompanied by strong winds.

The advice follows the death of two final year students of the St. James Seminary/Senior High School at Abesim, near Sunyani, who were struck to death by lightning during a heavy downpour on Tuesday.

Five other final year students, who were walking with the deceased on their way to their dormitories after the evening studies (prep), became unconscious and were admitted at the Regional Hospital.

Mr Kyeremeh asked the general public to also refrain from getting closer or holding objects such as mirrors, mobile phones and silver materials.

He said the people should be alert and prepare sufficiently for the season by checking the roof of their houses and structures to ensure they were in good shape.

He urged the public to plant and maintain trees around buildings and school compounds among other structures to reduce the impact of strong winds as well as to protect lives and property.
