Tamale MP asked to produce tape recording on Northerners

Accra, June 2, GNA – Mrs Joyce Adeline Bamford Addo, Speaker of Parliament, on Wednesday requested Alhaji Inusah Fusieni, Member of Parliament for Tamale-South, to produce a tape-recording in which the Member for Fanteakwa allegedly denigrated Ghanaians of Northern extraction. Alhaji Fusieni told Parliament that the Member of Fanteakwa, Mr Kwabena Amankwa Asiamah during a discussion on an Accra private radio on May 30, 2011, made scathing remarks about Ghanaians of Northern extraction. Mrs Addo ruled that since Mr Asiamah spoke in Twi before it was translated into English, she would have to listen to the original tape after which she would make a ruling on whether to refer it to the Privileges Committee or not. Meanwhile, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) on Wednesday unreservedly apologised for the alleged statement. A statement signed by Mr Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu, Member of Parliament for Suame and Minority Leader, said: 93The Party believes that the words and meaning of the MP’s statement has been twisted. “An investigation by the Privileges Committee of Parliament or any other body would establish this fact,” the statement said.
