Accra, April 28, GNA – The Building and Wood Workers International (BWI) Ghana, has called on the government to ratify the International Labour Organisation Convention 167 of 1988 on Safety and Health at work places.
Mr Pius Kweku Quainoo, Co-ordinating Secretary of the BWI, Ghana, made the call to mark the International Memorial Day for workers. He appealed to Parliament to pass the relevant laws to enforce the convention.
The BWI comprises Construction Building and Material Workers’ Union, Public Services Workers Union, and Timber and Wood Workers Union.
The rest are Public Utilities Workers Union and the Ghana Agriculture Workers Union. The day commemorates workers who died, sustained injuries and other associated maladies in the course of duty. Mr Quainoo attributed the cause of accidents to inadequate provision of safety working gears, saying, 93a little carefulness, timeliness, provision of needed resources and sensitisation”, would go a long way to minimise the incidents.
