More than 1.3 million to contract HIV/AIDS by 2014 – Health Director

More than 1.3 million Ghanaians would contract the HIV/AIDS disease by 2014 over if the current trend of infection continued.

In the same period over 1.1 million people in the country would be dying from the disease.

Dr Frank Nyonator, Volta Regional Director of Health Services, said when he presented a paper on the state of the disease in the country at a meeting of the reconstituted Regional Co-ordinating Council (VRCC) at Ho on Thursday.

He said the health bill on HIV/AIDS patients has also been projected to be 37.4 billion cedis by that time compared to the total budget for the Ministry, which now stood at two billion cedis.

Dr Nyonator said between January and June, this year, 300 pregnant women, who called at the antenatal clinics in the region, tested positive to HIV.
