NDC Will Not Collapse – Atta Mills

Former Vice President Atta Mills has dismissed suggestions that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is facing extinction. He was reacting to statements by some members of the ruling New Patriotic Party that the NDC is on the verge of collapse.

He said the NDC is in the process of reorganising itself, as any party would do after losing an election. In an interview with JOYFM, Professor Mills noted that the economic crises that the country and indeed the world experienced last year contributed to the party’s defeat in last year’s general election.

Political analysts have argued that the influence of former President Rawlings on the party has waned following his exit from office and the party will not survive without him.

Professor Mills however disagrees with this view saying that the ex-President has laid a solid foundation for the party, which other members could build on. He also denied that there are power brokers in the party controlling affairs adding that disagreements over issues do not suggest that there are factions within the party.

The latest government official to predict a collapse of the NDC is Leader of Government Business and Majority Leader, J.H. Mensah. According to him, “the NDC is on its way to breaking up. They have nothing now to keep them together but we don’t wish them ill.”

The ‘Evening News’ newspaper quotes Mr. Mensah as saying that “by the time we finish with the numerous court cases against some of its members, the NDC will be no more.” He gave the assurance that the NPP would effectively implement good policies to redeem Ghana from its deplorable state.
