Cashew stealing syndicate on the rampage

Nkoranza (B/A), March 18, GNA – Cashew farmers at Asuoso in the Nkoranza South District of the Brong Ahafo Region have become increasingly worried about the activities of a syndicate of young men that raid their farms and steal their nuts in the night. Efforts made to arrest members of the syndicate who also steal containers and bags of cashew nuts from homes, which they later sell to cashew purchasing companies at Nkoranza, have proved futile. Nana Kwasi Afosah Kudom, Krontihene of Asuoso disclosed this to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Nkoranza.

He explained that cashew nuts attract high market price and a watchdog committee was being organised in the area to help curb the activities of the thieves.

Persons found to have in their possession cashew nuts but later proved not to be farmers of the crop will be arrested and handed over to the police, the chief said.

Nana Kudom appealed to cashew dealers to be very vigilant in dealing with children who carried cashew nuts for sale at their purchasing depots in view of the increasing cases of theft of the crop in the communities.

Meanwhile police at Nkoranza have been called upon to extend night patrols to combat crime in the communities. 18 March 11
