Government should implement Protocols-Konadu

Accra, March 9, GNA – Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, President of the 31st December Women’s Movement, has said it was important for government to have the political will to implement Protocols. She said over the years, successive governments in the country had been signatories to Conventions, Charters and Protocols but the major problem with these documents had been their lack of implementation.

Nana Konadu said this at Lashibi in Accra on Tuesday when she inaugurated the Tema West Constituency branch of the Movement. She said in spite of the efforts of women at the Beijing Conference in 1995 for their governments to implement the Beijing Platform for Action, government had done little to address the issues of Women in the country.

Nana Konadu said without women’s emancipation and liberation, there could be no freedom in the country.

The former First Lady, therefore, urged government to do more to address gender imbalance in society by not only providing women with their basic needs, but to also respect their fundamental human rights as well as give equal opportunities to all manner of persons. She appealed to women to champion their cause in a collective manner by rising up and with a common voice guard against attempts and efforts that militate against women emancipation and empowerment. Nana Konadu reminded Women that their total liberation could only come about through struggles, hard work and determination, and would therefore not be secured on a silver platter. 9 March 11
