Jailed 10yrs for Indian hemp possession

Tarkwa, Feb. 19, GNA – The Tarkwa Circuit Court has sentenced Kwame Amewugah, 27, a galamsey operator to 10 years imprisonment for possessing Indian hemp.

He pleaded guilty.

Prosecuting Police Inspector Florence Tawiah told the court presided over by Mr Samuel Obeng Diawuo that on June 1, 2008 at a about 1030 hours, the Police acting on a tip-off, arrested Amewugah while he was transporting eight maxi sacks and five mini sacks of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp from Kumasi through Tarkwa.

The substances were in a Benz bus with registration number GT 7795 V. She said when the suspect was arrested, he confirmed that they belonge= d to him and after tests were conducted it was confirmed that the substance was Indian hemp.
