Parts of Biakoye District boycott District level elections.

Nkonya-Ahenkro, (V/R), Dec. 30, GNA- Four out of five

traditional areas in the newly inaugurated Biakoye District, namely,

Apesokubi, Worawora, Tapa, Bowiri and Nkonya Wurupong

Township, reportedly boycotted the District level elections held on

Wednesday, December 29. The elections were however held at Nkonya-Ahenkro, the capital

of the new district. But Ms Regina Ahmed, the Biakoye District Officer of the

Electoral Commission (EC), told the GNA by phone that, there was

a problem with ballot papers at Nkonya-Wurupong, which

accounted for the elections not taking place there, and that, it has

been postponed to Friday, December 31. She said except for Worawora and Kwamekrom, where the

elections were boycotted, the other traditional areas voted, even

though turn-out was low because the youths in those areas tried to

prevent people from voting. In a demonstration last Monday to protest their alleged sidelining

from the inauguration of the new Assembly, the people of the four

traditional areas served notice to boycott the elections, unless the

“proper thing was done”. In a Press statement signed by their representatives, the four

traditional areas complained that by not inviting them to the

inauguration, the organizers suggested that they were not part of the

new district and therefore called for a 93new Biakoye District” to be

created for the four traditional areas. The elections however went on peacefully in other areas.
