Women’s Council official Warns Against Female Genital Mutilation

Bawku (U/E),–8 June The Upper East regional co-ordinator of the National Council on Women and Development (NCWD) Madam Veronica Munya, has warned communities in the Bawku East district, against the continued practice of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). Speaking at an educational rally at Bawku on FGM, Madam Munya said anyone seen cutting any part of the female genital would be arrested and prosecuted. She said in the past, police were unable to prosecute offenders in

the district because they had not received a copy of the act on FGM, but she has now presented a copy to the district police commander, Mr G.C. Asante. Mr Asante commended the NCWD and the Ghana Association for Women Welfare for their effort to stop the practice of FGM.
