Accra, Dec. 3, GNA – The Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) has appealed to the government to address the myriad of problems facing farmers.
These include the rotting of food stuck in rural areas because of un-motorable roads to link them to major market centers, the high cost of seed and fertilizer, lack of farming implements and materials and recurrent fluctuation in food prices. The appeal was made in a statement issued by Ms Anna Bossman, Acting Commissioner of CHRAJ to commemorate National Farmers Day celebration on Friday, December 3.
It said other problems were unfair terms of trade and the growing preference in urban centres for foreign products to the detriment of locally produced food items. “These issues need to be properly addressed by the government and all relevant stakeholders so that Ghana can be self sufficient in food,” the statement said.
“Ghanaians are encouraged to patronise local food products more to enable the farmers reap the full benefit of their labour and to encourage others to enter into farming,” it said.
