Accra, Nov 29, GNA – Mobile Web Ghana (MWG), a non-governmental organisation at the weekend launched its maiden Mobile Entrepreneurs in Africa Project in Accra to recruit and train students in developing mobile contents.
Dr Max Froumentin, Managing Director of MWG said a pilot programme would be started next year with 20 initial students who are technologically and business oriented to develop software in the Ghanaian context. He said since mobile patronage was booming in the country there was the need to develop mobile phone applications that would be relevant to the people such as farmers and businesses.
Dr Froumentin said the training programme would take about three weeks after which a competition would be organised among the students followed by awarding of prizes for those who would come out with the best models. The launch, which has “Advance the Web to Empower People” as its theme was attended mostly by the youth from tertiary institutions. The participants were unanimous in their view that the mobile phone service providers should be involved in MWG programmes to share experiences with them. The MWG is a subsidiary of World Wide Web Foundation and its activities in the country are being funded by Vodafone, a telecommunication provider.
