Police arrest four armed robbers in Western Region

Sekondi (W/R), Nov. 15, GNA – The Western Regional Police Command has arrested four suspected armed robbers for their alleged involvement in robbery incidents at Enhi-Assankragwa road and Enhi-Kumasi road that occurred on November 1 and 12 this month respectively. The four suspects are Philip Boabeng, 23, Ebenezer Armah Bullu, 36, Shaibu Mumuni, 36 and Kwasi Amoh, 29.

They were alleged to have robbed Enhi-Assankragwa bound passenger bus and Enhi-Kumasi bound Ford bus carrying traders. The robbers allegedly took away huge sums of money and mobile phones belonging to the traders on board. A passenger, Mboah Mesu, 50, who attempted to disarm one of the armed robbers, was killed.

Speaking at a press briefing at Sekondi on Monday, the Western Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Alhaji Hamidu Mahama, said one of the suspects Philip Boabeng confirmed his involvement in the robbery during police interrogation where he also mentioned the other three accomplices.

DCOP Mahama noted that, the Command had intensified police/military patrols in all the 17 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies in the region, to clamp down on the upsurge of highway robbery. He charged the public and all well-meaning Ghanaians to report any suspicious character in their neighbourhood to the police for immediate action to be taken.

DCOP Mahama stressed that, it would take the collaborative effort of the police and the general public to track down recent uptick of armed robbery and other crimes in the country.

The Regional Police Commander said his outfit had received three police vehicles from the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and other logistics to boost their work, adding that more police stations would be opened in crime-prone communities in the region.

DCOP Mahama indicated that the Ghana Police Service had written to all transport companies in the country to provide them security for their passengers during long distance journeys, saying some of them had welcomed the move whilst others had rejected it with the excuse that, they could not offer seats for the police personnel on board. 15 Nov. 10
