MMTL vows to weed out malpractices

Kumasi, Oct 29, GNA-Mr Prince Owusu-Agyemang, acting Ashanti Regional Manager of the Metro Mass Transport Limited (MMTL), has vowed to weed out malpractices in the sale of its tickets to raise revenue and sustain its operation.

He, however, appealed for more support and co-operation of passengers to achieve this. He was speaking at the launch of the “Operation Show your ticket Project” in Kumasi.

It seeks to educate the public on the need to ensure that they pay the correct fares and insist on valid tickets. Mr Owusu-Agyemang warned that passengers caught on board the buses without valid tickets would pay a penalty, 15 times the cost of the fare.

Offenders would additionally be prosecuted in court. He said staff of the company and passengers have a shared responsibility to keep the buses on the road. He gave the assurance that they would render reliable, affordable and safety transport system. Mr Antwi Gyamfi, Board Chairman of the Company, said they would create the right working conditions to grow the company. He urged conductors, drivers and other staff to work harder to improve performance.

Mr Gyamfi expressed regret that many of their buses had broken down and attributed this to the poor nature of the country’s roads. Police Inspector Ernestina Asamoah of the Suntreso Police Motor Traffic and Transport Unit urged the drivers to avoid speeding, wrong over-taking and driving under the influence of alcohol to help bring down road accidents. 29 Oct.10
