Nzema Traditonal Council and GNPC resolve impasse

Bonyere (W/R), October 28, GNA – The chiefs and elders of the Western Nzema Traditional Council have pledged their full support for the establishment of a gas plant in the area for the development of Ghana’s emerging oil industry.

This follows a meeting with the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), the Ministry of Energy, the Jomoro district Assembly and the traditional council at Bonyere in the Western Region. Awulae Annor Adjei, Omanhen of the Council, expressed disappointment over a demonstration by the people following the destruction of their farms by the GNPC.

He, therefore, called on all people in the area to give peace a chance and embrace the establishment of the project. He noted that the project will change the face of the District and bring development to the people.

Awulae Adjei urged the GNPC to ensure effective communication in the communities they operate to bridge the communication gap which accounted for the demonstration. The Deputy Minister for Energy, Mr Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, said the establishment of the gas plant was key to the industrialization of the nation and urged stakeholders to collaborate in making the project a reality.

He proposed the formation of a local coordinating team to deal with the process of land acquisition among other things. Mr Buah called for peace and unity between GNPC and the parties involved before the commencement of the project. The District Chief executive for Jomoro, Mr Victor Nyianyi Kabenla pledged the Assembly’s readiness to lend the required support and called on the people to ensure the success of the project. 28 Oct 10
