Water shortage hits Ajumako Hospital

Ajumako (C/R), Oct 28, GNA – Madam Khadija Hayford, Medical Assistant at the Ajumako District Hospital has appealed to the Government, Ghana Health Service, the Ajumako-Enyan-Esiam District Assembly and other philanthropists to support the Hospital with a borehole to ease an acute water shortage.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in an interview, the Medical Assistant said the supply of pipe-borne water to the Hospital by the Ghana Water Company had ceased for the past weeks. A caretaker attending to an expectant mother at the Hospital also told the GNA that she had to carry water in gallons and jerry cans from Bisease to the Hospital at Ajumako to clean the maternity ward. The Ajumako new District Hospital, according to GNA investigations, is yet to be commissioned in December.

The 30-bed hospital which started in 2007 is being funded by the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and the Ghana Government at the cost of GH¢116,818.00. It has modern facilities, Maternity Block, Theatre, OPD/Adjunct Clinic, and electricity transformers, among others, but no provision was made for water.

Mr Albert Sagoe Paintsil, Site Engineer of the UDEC Construction Company, confirmed the water shortage, adding that construction work had been stalled as a result of the water shortage, compelling them to rely on water tankers from Mankessim at an extra cost. 28 Oct 10
