The President of the Students’ Representative Council (SRC) of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) is appealing to lecturers and members of the University Teachers’ Association (UTAG) to soften their stance and return to the lecture rooms for the sake of their students.
The President, Mr. Yaw Oduro Amoah, in a press release issued on Thursday urged the government to be more sensitive to the plight of lecturers and be quick to act positively on education related issues, adding that government should “make education its priority since it is the key to national development”.
He lamented the fact that students of the affected institutions are losing precious credit hours which cannot be recovered; a situation he says is casting a huge dent on the image Ghanaian universities to the outside world.
According to the students’ leader, government would be unfair to all students if this strike action results in the closure of all public universities, adding that students would not take it lightly if that should happen.
He asked students and student leaders to desist from being coerced by politicians into taking political stances on “issues of such nature” since it undermines the spirit of student activism.
Meanwhile, Executives of the KNUST branch of the Tertiary Educational Institutions Network (TEIN) of the NDC today in a press release apologized to the UTAG-KNUST president, Dr. Kwasi Ohene-Yankyera for “some factual inaccuracies contained in our earlier press statement dated 12th October, 2010 on the on-going UTAG strike action.
