Okere appeal for the creation of a separate district

Awukugua Akuapem, Oct. 8, GNA – Mr William Kwame Owiredu, Managing Director of Mark Short Limited, a construction firm, on Friday appealed to President John Evans Atta Mills to fulfil the promise he made to the people of Okere by creating a separate district for them. Mr Owiredu made the statement at a ceremony to kick-start the construction of a six-unit classroom block for the Awukugua District Assembly Primary School, at Awukugua Akuapem at the cost of GHC 130,000. He said during the 2008 electioneering campaign, President Mills, then presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), promised the people of Okere that when he wins the presidency, he would create a separate district out of the existing Akuapem North District for them.

Mr Owiredu said 20 months into the administration of the President nothing had been heard of the promise. “The people of Okere are looking forward to hearing from the President about the fulfilment of the promise,” he emphasized Mr George Opare-Addo, District Chief Executive, for Akuapem North, said the project was being funded by the Ghana Education Trust Fund. He said the project was “dear to the heart” of the assembly, because when completed would put an end to the shift system at the Dawu-Awukugua United Primary School. Mr Opare-Addo appealed to the contractor commissioned for the project to speed up work in order to complete it within the eight months stipulated time.
