Ghana to celebrate World Disaster Reduction Day

Accra, Oct. 8, Ghana will join other UN International Strategy of Disaster Risk Reduction (UN/ISDR) member countries to celebrate World Disaster Reduction Day on October 13. This was contained in a statement signed by Mr Kofi Portuphy, National Coordinator of National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO).

It said the Minister for the Interior would on October 13 launch the programme of activities to mark the Day at a press conference, to be held at the Conference Hall of the Ministry of Information. The statement said the awareness campaign for this year focuses on ‘Making Cities Resilient: My city is getting ready.’ It said the campaign was aimed at getting local governments and national authorities to take action towards making cities resilient to disasters as part of creating sustainable urban communities. The statement said NADMO in collaboration with the Local Government Service Secretariat had planned a year-long programme of activities for the campaign in Ghana.

Some of the activities are media discussions, press conference, publications on disasters, outreach and durbars in communities, workshops for Municipal, Metropolitan and District Chief Executives, District Coordinators of NADMO and stakeholders.
