The Vice President, John Dramani Mahama, arrived home last night from Nigeria after attending the 50th anniversary of Nigeria’s Independence in Abuja, which was nearly marred by bomb blasts.
The Vice President, who was worried about the incident, described it as a flaw on Africa’s effort towards the deepening of the democratic dispensation.
He expressed the hope that an investigation into the incident would help identify the perpetrators of the heinous crime and bring them to book.
Meanwhile, eight people are reported dead in the explosion.
Police Officials have confirmed that two blasts outside the Justice Ministry were caused by car bombs.
The bombs went off not far from Eagle Square where the Nigerian elite had gathered for the official celebrations.
Reports say some senior members of the movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta, MEND have dissociated themselves from the blast but a small faction within the group is dissatisfied with the government’s handling of an amnesty process in the Niger Delta.
President Goodluck Jonathan who was inspecting a guard of honour at the time described the incident as unfortunate.
