Agortime-Kpetoe gets centre for preserving rare samples of Kente

Kpetoe, Aug. 31, GNA- A 30,000 Ghana cedis Eco-Tourism and Visitors Centre for the preservation of over 500 samples of antique Ewe Kente was inaugurated at Agotime-Kpetoe on Monday.

It was built by Nature Conservation Research Centre (NCRC), a non-governmental organization with funding from the European Commission.

Nene Nuer Keteku III, Konor of Agotime Traditional Area who inaugurated the centre, said the motifs and designs of Ewe Kente with their special backgrounds evoked powerful emotions and symbolize some of the most fundamental human ideals.

He expressed disappointment that majority of Kente weaving communities in Eweland did not have the orientation to preserve their work for posterity and expressed the hope that the initiative would be replicated for the good of the industry and for the tradition to continue.

Mr Michael Kwabla Adzaho, Adaklu-Anyigbe District Chief Executive, called on the people of Agortime Traditional Area to use the Centre to publicize the uniqueness of its Kente industry.

Mr John Mason, President of NCRC, commended the community for the achievement and expressed the hope that the conservation of Kpetoe’s unique traditional textile would continue and make the community one of the best in providing information on traditional textile industry.

The inauguration was the prelude to a week-long Kente Festival which would reach its climax with a grand durbar on September 04.
