Accra, Aug. 31, GNA – The Ghana National Association of Teaches (GNAT), on Tuesday expressed concern about the deduction of 15 per cent professional allowance paid to teachers in July, and its non-payment in August.
A statement issued in Accra and signed by Mrs Irene Duncan-Adanusa, General Secretary of GNAT, said “a look at teachers’ pay slips for August clearly shows this unfortunate scenario”.
It said this development was contrary to the directive issued by the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning to the Controller and Accountant General on June 30.
The directive said “the allowance will cease to exist when the Single Spine Salary Structure is implemented for Ghana Education Service Staff”.
The statement said “this group of teachers is yet to migrate onto the Single Spine Salarv Structure and therefore the stoppage of the allowance is not in line with the dictates of the directive from the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning”.
The National Secretariat of GNAT, therefore, called on the Controller and Accountant General, to rectify the anomaly as a matter of urgency by reinstating the professional allowances for July and August and ensuring that subsequent payments were made until Ghana Education Service employees were migrated.
