Government to resource Prisons Service to help reform prisoners

Wa, Aug 24, GNA – Alhaji Issahaku Salia, the Upper West Regional Minister says government will adequately resource the Ghana Prisons Service to enable the service to play its role of reforming prisoners.

“Government is aware of some of the things the Prisons Service need to help reform prisoners and will therefore not relent in its efforts in mobilizing resources to support the service to carry out its mandate,” he said.

Alhaji Salia said this when he visited the Ghana Prisons Service and the Customs, Excise and Preventive Service (CEPS) at Wa on Monday.

He commended the Prisons staff for their patience in dealing with the inmates and this had contributed to the peaceful atmosphere and security in the prisons yard.

Alhaji Salia also commended the staff for cultivating 96 acres of land to produce crops to support government’s effort towards the feeding of prisoners.

The Regional Commander of the Prisons Service, Assistant Director of Prisons Lord Nii Boye Tagoe, said security had been stable in the Prison because of the submissiveness of inmates coupled with the high sense of professionalism displayed by the officers.

He appealed to the government to increase the cost of feeding a prisoner from 60 pesewas a day to a much suitable amount.

Addressing personnel of CEPS, the Minister commended them for their hard work and urged them to continue to work hard to generate enough revenue.

Mr Samuel Terry Morkeh, the Sector Commander, thanked the Minister for the visit and pledged their commitment to discharge their duties without any reservations.

He appealed to the government to give them the necessary logistical support to enable do their work without any hindrance.
