Literacy programme for Kassena-Nankana West

Chiana-Katui (U/E), Aug 16, GNA – Some 234 children of school going age who did not have access to early education have graduated from a literacy programme dubbed 93class one project” at Katiu in the Kassena-Nankana West District.

The 59 girls and 175 boys between the ages of eight and 14 were taken through basic school methodology, numeracy and literacy skills.

The project is under a Danish-sponsored project, 91School for life’ which is aimed at giving basic numeracy and literacy skills to out-of-school children aged between eight and fourteen years to enable them integrate into the formal school system or develop themselves in other ways.

The project offers education that has immediate effect and direct benefits to parents and children so as to permanently change the attitude of parents towards education.

It also provides practical evidence to help shape national policy on Complementary Basic Education (CBE).

Speaking at the end of the programme at Katui the Director of the programme, Mr Niagia Santuah, said 18,000 Ghana cedis was used on the project including purchasing of bicycles, chalkboards, books, pencils, erasers and other teaching materials to promote teaching and learning.

He said 25,000 Ghana cedis was voted to extend the project to Chiana-Asunia between October 2010 and June 2011 and that phase of the project would cover about 250 learners.
