Aboadze (W/R), July 21, GNA – Technicians of the Volta River Authority (VRA) are dismantling the damaged transformer at the Aboadze Power Thermal Station which was gutted by fire in preparation towards installation of a new transformer.
Leading newsmen to inspect the process at the Aboadze Power Thermal Station Mr Richard Badjer, VRA Director in charge of the Thermal Stations, said the installation would be completed soon to return the generating unit into service in the next few weeks.
He said a new transformer, which is already at the site and costing two million dollars, would be installed.
Mr Badjer said the damaged transformer, which was installed in 1997, was not completely burnt and would be critically examined and if possible repaired for use in future.
He said transformers have a lifespan of about 20 years. The station suffered its first fire incident two years ago.
Mrs Gertrude Koomson, Head of Public Relations, said the cause of the fire was being investigated and that there would be continuous power supply as there was sufficient reserve to cater for the shortfalls.
The VRA on Monday said fire gutted one of its 155 MVA transformers at the Aboadze Thermal Power Station on Saturday, July 17, resulting in the loss of 100MW power to the system.
