Koforidua, July 16, GNA – Monitoring of basic facilities at state institutions by the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), in the Eastern Region, revealed poor toilet facilities in schools, hospitals, police barracks and cells.
The CHRAJ embarked on the exercise to ascertain the situation of fundamental human rights, especially children’s rights to basic facilities like toilets.
According to the commission, the conditions prevailing at the state institutions are so poor, especially at basic public schools.
Mr Hubert Akrong, a principal investigator of CHRAJ told the Ghana News Agency in Koforidua that the district and municipal assemblies must deepen their social interventions by making such facilities available.
He said Suhum Kraboa Coaltar, Manya Krobo, Akuapem North, Asuogyaman districts and New Juaben Municipal Assembly, Koforidua and its environs were the most culpable.
Mr Akrong expressed worry that police barracks and cells in Koforidua are using pan latrines while at the public hospitals, there are inadequate toilet facilities.
He said CHRAJ also discovered that a well was sank close to a toilet facility, which he noted constituted a health threat to the local community and an abuse of the fundamental human rights of the people.
