Workers of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) have called on President Kufuor to immediately revoke the appointment of Mr. Fred Asante as substantive Managing Director of the company.
Ghanaian Chronicle report says all the regional branches of the ECG workers’ union except Ashanti and Eastern Regions have kicked against his appointment.
The paper says the workers in a resolution, raised concern over the health of Mr. Asante who is alleged to have suffered from a serious stroke and bought an orthopaedic chair at the cost of 12 million cedis ($1,700) from the company’s funds for use. They also allege that Mr. Asante who is 60 years old is due for immediate retirement after serving the company for over 35 years.
The workers also noted that they have lost trust in Mr. Asante because he has given out jobs, which could be done by workers on contract. He is also said to be the owner of a company, which clears bushes around high-tension poles belonging to the company.
The workers have urged the President to allow the former Managing Director, Mr. Emmanuel K. Annan to be at post for only one more year and compare the results. Mr. Asante who was the director of operations, assumed his new responsibility as Managing Director from the 1st of June while Mr. Annan was asked to revert to his former position as Lecturer at the University of Science and Technology.
